The Puppet Theater of the Republic of Karelia is one of the oldest puppet theaters in Russia, a professional repertoire theater that has more than eighty years of history and tradition.  There are about fifty performances for spectators of different age groups in the repertoire of the theater, different receptions and systems for puppet-making: performances with flatbed dolls and finger puppets, puppets, a living plan, a theater of shadows and objects, and traditional screen performances with cane dolls. The basis of the repertoire is performances for preschool, junior and middle school children, a number of performances are intended for youth audiences, as well as for family viewing. The performances have repeatedly become laureates of the Higher Theater Award of the Republic of Karelia “Onego Mask” in the nomination “Best Performance for Children”.

An important direction of activity of the Puppet Theater of the Republic of Karelia is the development and participation in international projects. Together with the culture department of the Municipality of Oulu (Finland) the theater developed and implemented a project to organize an international network of amateur children’s and youth puppet theaters in the province of Oulu and the Republic of Karelia. Together with the Goethe Institute and the Union of Theater Workers of the Russian Federation the theater staged the production of “The Nutcracker” based on the fairy tale by Hoffmann with the invitation of the production group from Tübingen, Germany (the director of the production and the artist Frank Zonle, directed by Christian Glotzner).

The theater is one of the organizers of the regional festivals Lambushka, The Mill of Fairytales, Elevator, regularly participates in prestigious competitions and festivals of puppet theaters in Russia, and carries out joint projects with theaters in Finland, Sweden and Norway. Actively uses various forms of work with the audience: in the theater there are guided tours, creative meetings, festive game programs, exhibitions of young artists are organized. Since 2007, together with the Puppet Theater Development Fund, there have been held actions for low-income and large families “In the world of childhood everyone is equal”.

Since 2003 the Puppet Theater of the Republic of Karelia hosts the Republican Festival of Children’s and Youth Puppet Theaters “Kuklantida” every two years.
