Theater “SNARK”

“SNARK” is a new generation theater for children and their parents, founded in 2012 in Moscow by director Yuri Alesin, a graduate of the RATI-GITIS. Snark is the name of a mysterious creature, for which the characters of Lewis Carroll’s poem “Hunting for the Snark”, allegories of the “Chase for Happiness” hunt.

The main principle of the theater “SNARK” is the spectator equality of children and parents: in the theater performances children think and reason as adults, and adults – laugh and rejoice childishly. The theater works in a chamber format, actively using new theatrical forms: storytelling, performance, interactive, street performance. Performances go to the accompaniment of live music, the performers take an active part in the action. In the troupe of the theater “SNARK” – professional actors and musicians. One of the tasks of the theater is to introduce children and their parents to wonderful works of world literature for children, who have not yet gained wide popularity in our country or undeservedly forgotten. Among them are the fairytales of Elinor Farjon and Gudrun Mebs, the stories of Sergei Sedov, as well as folk tales and songs.

In 2017, the directors and actors of the theater SNARK opened the Children’s Theater Studio together with the theatrical studio “Children of the District”. Unlike other studios, the organizers plan to introduce students not only to the professional foundations of the classical theater, but also to modern theater forms and genres, attracting specialists from independent topical theaters for this.

Performances of the theater SNARK are held at famous venues in Moscow: the Theater Center named after Su. Meyerhold, Creative Center “Sreda”, “Mamin Garden Seasons” in the Hermitage Garden, “Fanny Bell’s Lodge” in Bauman’s Garden. And also on non-theatrical venues: in museums, exhibition halls, libraries, cinemas, family clubs and art cafes. Among the new sites of the season are the Green School in Gorky Park, the Museum of Moscow, the theater studio “Children of the Rajka”. In the warm season the performances of the theater SNARK can be seen in the open air: the Hermitage Garden, the Museon Art Park, the Sokolniki Park. In 2015, the theater first performed on Red Square: the performance “Elephant-concert” was shown in the framework of the children’s theater program at the Moscow festival “Books of Russia”.
