The official birthday of the theater was November 7, 1936, when Kostroma saw a puppet “Fox-sister” in the play of the same name by Fedotov, played by six artists of the local Youth Theater.

In 1946, the Kostroma Puppet Theater received the highest assessment of the jury of the All-Russian Review of Children’s Theaters. 1957, at the All-Union Festival of Children’s Theaters, the theater makes a splash: from the festival Kostroma puppeteers bring twelve highest awards.

On the account of today’s collective of the Kostroma Regional Puppet Theater participated in dozens of all-Russian and international festivals with a variety of performances – from experimental productions for adults to interactive projects addressed to two-year-old spectators. And numerous victories, the brightest of which was the victory of the play “The Bear” based on the Chekhov play of the same name, created on the Kostroma stage by the famous director Vladimir Biryukov and no less famous artist Viktor Nikonenko. Delivered in 2009 with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia and the creative association “Cult-Project”, this “joke in love dolls” already in 2011 becomes laureate of the Higher National Theater Award of Russia “Golden Mask” in the nomination “Best Performance in the Puppet Theater” . And opens a new page in the history of the Kostroma Regional Puppet Theater, a theater that interacts with the most interesting directors and artists of the present, not afraid of experiments and actively included in the festival space of the country.
